TXU Energy Announces Recipients of 2022 Energy Leadership Awards

Award recognizes four recipients in the categories of sustainability, engagement, innovation, and community

IRVING, Texas — TXU Energy today announced its recognition of four innovative North Texas companies as category winners in the 2022 TXU Energy Leadership Award Program. This program highlights corporate and non-profit leaders defining energy responsibility. The awards were announced in conjunction with the TXU Energy Summit held today in Arlington.

Gabe Castro, senior vice president of business markets for TXU Energy, stated, “We are proud to recognize these companies and their energy leaders. From developing next-generation technology to assisting with essential services, their commitment to sustainability, engagement, innovation, and community are a true inspiration.  We are hopeful that their stories will inspire others across the state to make an impact.”

The four North Texas-area winners include:

• Leadership in Sustainability – Trane Technologies

Trane Technologies is at the forefront of climate innovation and sustainability. The company has made a global commitment to protect the climate through its bold 2030 commitments, including to achieve carbon neutral status for its business operations and to realize their Gigaton Challenge. Trane is working to reduce one gigaton of carbon emissions from its customers’ carbon footprint by 2030 – this reduction equates to the annual emissions of Italy, France, and the U.K. combined. Trane Technologies is one of only about 50 companies in the world to have two sets of carbon reduction commitments validated by the Science-Based Targets Initiative.

This sustainability focus is on display at the Tyler, Texas facility which has operated as RE100 (utilizing 100% renewable electricity) since 2020. The company has also made energy efficiency upgrades and acquired additional renewable energy credits, helping reduce 41,300 metric tons of scope 2 electricity carbon over the past two years. The business is continuously exploring and incorporating new practices to expand on the efforts to reduce Scope 1 carbon emissions, including recent efforts to retool the Tyler facility to utilize a next-generation refrigerant with low global warming potential.

• Leadership in Engagement – Billingsley Company

Billingsley Company’s master-planned developments go beyond design and amenities. They are truly models of sustainability. The majority of Billingsley Company buildings are now powered with 100% wind energy. And last year, the company used $29,000 in TXU GreenBack^SM rebate dollars to install HVAC and lighting upgrades. These changes save 1 million kWh of electricity each year, representing a 20% reduction in usage.

The company engaged employees in its overall sustainability and philanthropic goals, implementing recycling programs at every property.  In addition to these achievements, Billingsley Company donated more than $500,000 to support educational outreach programs, food banks, global entrepreneurship organizations, international charitable organizations, and programs that motivate and inspire excellence in scientific research.

• Leadership in Innovation – Riot Blockchain

Riot Blockchain is proudly disrupting the future of currency – while redefining what a sustainable Bitcoin mining operation looks like. This year, the company is recognized for its innovative approach to energy conservation.

Riot’s recent expansion at its Rockdale, Texas facility includes an immersion-cooled building; further expansions will include dry-cooler and water pumping systems. Immersion-cooled mining allows for lower energy consumption and water use, reducing the overall carbon footprint. Riot will bring this same technology to its new Navarro County mining facility, expected online in summer 2023.

• Leadership in Community – The Senior Source

As a TXU Energy Aid partner since 2006, The Senior Source has helped nearly 14,000 older adults with $3.5 million in bill payment assistance funds, including $800,000 over the last two years. But the nonprofit’s community leadership extends far beyond donations. Over the last few years, The Senior Source has helped clients affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, even through the most isolating moments. 

The Senior Source ensures the financial and emotional well-being of seniors through a variety of programs including its volunteer programs, caregiver support, fraud and scam prevention, and financial assistance program.
